Institute Profile

 

The Public Health Institute acts as a ‘think PHI buildingtank’ for the health sector by analyzing policies, searching for evidence and advocating for health system reform. It has a workforce of both full time and part time staff, as well as external collaborators, together forming a group of leading experts in the field. PHI was established in May of 2009 by ministerial decree under the Directorate of Human Resources for Health, Federal Ministry of Health, which supervises the running of the institute through a director appointed by the Undersecretary for Health. It is mandated for training and research, and to contribute to the development of public health in the country.

What We Do

PHI offers postgraduate degrees in several public health and related fields, both diploma and masters, as part of the overall capacity building vision of the ministry of health. It aims to arm health professionals in the country with the skills and knowledge to improve and strengthen the health system

PHI aims to lead reform through conducting and supervising high quality research in priority areas formulated in collaboration with both national and international bodies. It also provides a platform for discussion of public health issues and their solutions based on the latest evidence and consensus from experts in the field, through the Public Health Forum.

PHI assists decision makers by providing evidence-based technical advice for developing policy options and outlining designs for reform interventions. This translates into a broad range of areas in which the institute offers its expertise and professional services to different stakeholders and bodies in different sectors.
